Saw saw
I saw Saw last night on DVD and it was good … I wish now I had caught it at the theater.
In this type of film, the main attractiveness to me is the ingenuity/personality of the killer. A well-developed and unusual villian goes a long way to making a good horror/thriller. Saw comes strong in the “crazy serial killer”, he’s trying to teach his victims the value of living, and this is the most solid and enjoyable part of the movie. (Which is good considering it’s the majority of the movie).
Saw is Se7en-esque, although not on the same level. Think of it more as a Se7en-lite, a little less characterization, a little less depth in philosophy, a little worse acting (ok, a lot worse), etc. and you won’t be far off the mark.
That being said, this is still a kick-ass “psycho killer” movie, the best I’ve seen in a while and well worth watching.
