Doom 3

I finally beat Doom 3 last night - it took a while because I could only grab a few minutes here and there during the week, and maybe and hour or two on the weekends.

This was a damn good game, and genuinely scary I thought. The sound effects were absolutely fantastic, and really made the game as far as I was concerned. The visuals were nice, but sadly my machine couldn’t handle anything except “low quality” graphics. I’m waiting until my birthday this July to get a new desktop, but I didn’t want to wait that long to play Doom.

I don’t know exactly how long it took to finish, if I were to count total time played but I’d guess around 16 hours. That’s a lot of entertainment, considering the relative costs between a video game and a movie. I figure here in Okinawa, it would cost me about $128 to watch 8 movies. That’s not even getting into the replay value. Granted, movies are still a bit more “enjoyable” than games, but not by much and, more importantly, less so as game makers push the immersive envelope further and further, while Hollywood studios aim lower and lower.

The MPAA is awful busy out there making an obnoxious ass out of itself, while it really needs to be focusing on having its members deliver higher quality entertainment at lower prices. (Not that they will agree with that assessment, of course.)

I see there’s an expansion pack on the way. I’ll probably pick that up as well.
